The alchemyst is in search of transmuting the lesser elements into gold.
In reality this is a metaphor for the inner transformation of the human being.
The elements earth (the physical), water (the emotional), air/wind (the mental) and fire (the spiritual aspiration) are being activated, and made to work together in order to realize this inner transformation.
